The Faro de Moncloa is a truly privileged lookout point from which one
can admire spectacular views of Madrid and the Guadarrama mountain
range.Popularly known since its inauguration in February 1992 as the
Faro de la Moncloa, this platform was erected at the junction of the Avenida de la Victoria, the Nacional VI highway and the Avenida de los Reyes Católicos. Besides serving as a base for municipal antennas, it also provides illumination for this very busy traffic junction.
The shaft of this singular construction, designed by Salvador Pérez Arroyo, has a diameter of 6 metres and is 76 meters high, and after adding the upper platform, its total height is 92 meters. The platform has a surface area of 400 square meters and can be effortlessly visited by sightseers thanks to the lift inside the shaft.
1,200 cubic meters of cement and 100,000 kilos of steel were employed in its construction, and its foundations are built over eight 18-meter-deep slabs. 20 projector lamps with an individual capacity of 2,000 watts are installed on the platform.
