The original building of the Estación de Atocha,
inaugurated in 1851, burnt to the ground in a fire, forcing the
construction of a new one, in 1892, with an iron structure, designed by
Antonio de Palacio; it's the building that exists today, considered one
of the most remarkable examples of the iron architecture.
By
the end of the 20th century, without the steam engines and the cargo
that used to fill the station, Rafael Moneo refurbished the station,
which now includes a tropical garden of 4000 square metres (roughly two
acres) with more than 7000 plants of 400 differents species.
