festivalotono.jpgTheatre, dance, music, circus. The world of performing arts is the star of the new edition of the Festival de Otoño (Autumn Festival), which will be held in Madrid from November 4 to 29.

This will be the last year the capital celebrates the traditional Festival de Otoño, since from 2010 it will change its season to spring. After 26 years as one of the most important cultural events in Europe, it promises to say goodbye to the fall in style: 35 shows performed by six Spanish companies and troupes from 19 other countries in 11 venues in Madrid and 10 in municipalities of the region.
The opening act will be particularly moving since it will pay tribute to the recently deceased choreographer Pina Bausch, whose presence has always been a constant in the capital's festival. Teatros del Canal will lend its stage to various performances. Between the 4th and 8th, it will welcome Kontakthof, one of Bausch's most emblematic shows that she premiered last year in two different versions: one with children and the other starring dancers who are over 65. It is the latter that will feature in this festival. From the 25th to 29th, the theatre will receive this season's star mise-en-scène Trilogia della villeggiatura, directed by Toni Servillo, who was named Best Actor at the European Film Awards for Il Divo and Gomorra. Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's The Three Penny Opera, directed by Marina Bollaín, will be staged from the 27th to 29th.

Between the 20th and 23rd, Canadian Robert Lepage, another artist who never misses the event, will present in Teatro de Madrid the final part of his dragon trilogy The Blue Dragon, a combination of dance, music and visual and sound effects that revolve around contemporary China. The Far East will also play a lead role in the Teatro Circo Price, which from the 20th to the 22nd will be staging Lang Toi, a fabulous show brought to us by the New Vietnamese Circus. Just a few days earlier, on the 11th, Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, the author of such renowned soundtracks as The Last Emperor, will bring magic to the stage with a piano concert.

After the success of The Coleman Family's Omission, the Argentinean actor, author and director Claudio Tolcachir will present, from November 5 to 29, the Third Body in the Teatro Español. Those looking for new languages on stage should be sure not to miss Feed, an avant-garde audiovisual performance presented by Austrian Kurt Hentschläger in La Casa Encendida from 27th to 29th. Madrid's theatres will once again sparkle in autumn!
