Plaza Mayor - Main Square of Madrid
The stunningly beautiful Plaza Mayor is a highlight of any visit to Madrid. All the neighborhoods of the historic centre, are situated around this historic square. The grandeur of its buildings - the uniformly ochre apartments with wrought-iron balconies offset by the exquisite frescoes of the 17th century Real Casa de la Panadería (Royal BAkery) - is one thing, but this is a living breathing entity, from the outdoor tables of the terrazas to the students strewn across the cobblestones on a sunny day. Threafter, bullfights watched by 50,00 spectators were a recurring spectacle until 1878, while the autos-de-fe (the ritual condemnation of heretics) fe the Spanish Inquisition also took place here. Fire largely destroyed the square in 1790, but it was rebuilt and became an important market and hub of the city life.
At the center of the square is a bronze statue of King Philips III, constructed in 1616 by the Italian sculptors Giovanni de Bologna and his apprentice Pietro Tacca. In 1848 it was moved from the Casa de Campo to the Plaza Mayor. Around the same time, the plaza was redesigned with gardens, but those were removed in 1936.
