Morrissey

The
fact that Morrissey is returning to Madrid is reason enough for many of
his fans to flock to his show at the Saturday Night Fiber. After all,
his fans know they are not exaggerating when they say you can't talk
about the history of pop music without mentioning Morrissey, the
mythical British singer and songwriter behind The Smiths, the band he
was with from 1982 to 1987. His latest single All you need is Morrissey
was released in April, and the title reveals his enormous
self-confidence! Morrissey has clearly created songs with a personal
trademark and a characteristic style that resist the passing of time,
to the point that they feel like they could have been composed
yesterday.

Mika

After creating anthems capable of brightening up the darkest morning, Mika positioned himself as the new big thing in 2007 with Life In Cartoon Motion, a contagious debut that earned critical acclaim and mainstream sales.
A fan of Queen, Prince and Elton John, with a hint of Wham! and of
Rufus Waingwright and Beck, Mica Penniman seems ready to return glam
and camp irony to British pop music.

Babyshambles

Pete Doherty and Co., Babyshambles, have published their second album, Shotter's Nation,
which according to the lead singer is their best work yet. Recorded at
the Olympic studios in London and produced by Stephen Street (Blur, The
Smiths), the songs show a range that the band had always insinuated but
had never taken to a record. Twelve tracks with a considerable variety
of influences: from The Kinks to punk, or Stone Roses, with a touch of
Soul 2 Soul, the indie tunes of the 80s, Madness, Blondie, Tamla Motown or Brit pop. The last song on the album is a real winner: The lost art of murder
is an acoustic rendition performed with Bert Jansch, a legend of
British folk music and a magnificent guitarist. Doherty reasserts
himself as one of the greatest composers and singers of the last twenty
years.

My Bloody Valentine

During the few years they were together, from 1985 to 1991, My Bloody
Valentine were one of the most influential bands in punk and created a
style that some have called shoegazing and noise. The group gave noise an openly aesthetic value in their last album Loveless
from 1991. Now they're back together and plan on doing an international
tour and releasing new material, alongside their classic tracks.

The Rumble Strips

Any concert these five musicians give is the perfect excuse for a
party: they are fresh, fun, happy and friendly. Many have compared them
to groups like Dexy's Midnight Runners, The Style Council or Vincent
Vincent & The Villains, since their music is closely related to
soul and pop. Their first album Girls and Weather was released in 2007. Fans are eagerly awaiting their second record.

Hot Chip

Made in The Dark, Hot Chip's latest album, has catapulted them
to a privileged position in the international electronic scene. Their
musical proposal reflects how the band members, Alexis Taylos, Joe
Goddard, Owen Clarke, Al Doyle and Felix Martin, feel towards new
sounds applied to pop. They see tracks as the main backbone of the
album, and obviously as the perfect element for experimentation. Titles
like Over and over or Ready for the floor reveal their ability to make poetry with synthetic sounds.

Siouxsie

Mantaray is the first solo album released by Siouxsie, who, with her Banshees, was a legend of after- and post-punk music.
The artist, who has always been a free spirit, now appears happy,
convincing and elegant. Once again, her music accommodates a wide range
of styles: from cabaret, to glam or electronic music. An explosive cocktail that will definitely spark a reaction, because Siouxsie stands for magnetism.

in search of the latest works, undiscovered gems and the traditional

2008 edition is devoted to Latin American literature, which has
experienced a new boom in recent years thanks to figures such as
Lima-born novelist Santiago Roncagliolo, Colombian writer Juan Gabriel
Vásquez, Argentinean author Alan Pauls or Mexican narrator Juan Viloro.

Distance to our apartments for rent in Madrid:
Apartment Tirso de Molina is a 15 minutes by subway to Madrid Book Fair
Apartment Retiro is a 10 minutes to Madrid Book Fair
Books take over Madrid. The Book Fair will turn the Retiro Park into the biggest bookshop in the world, during two weeks and three days. Almost all the books published in Spain will be on sale in the more than three hundred stands in this fair.

The genre par excellence at the Book Fair is the novel, although children and teenagers' literature is also the main protagonist of many activities in this fair and seems very attractive to visitors. For two weeks and three days, the Retiro Park will become a space to approach the most recently published books as well as to renew one's interest in classical Literature.

But the Book Fair is not only a place to get acquainted with the latest books. It is also a meeting point for publishers and their public and, mainly, for writers and readers. The greatest part of this event will be those moments devoted to book signing. The Fair is also a space to talk about books, to reflect about everything related to reading and to discuss issues related to literature creation and culture in general.

An amazing set of programmed events confirm the dynamism of Madrid's Book Fair and its capacity to attract the public: conversations with authors round tables, lectures, practical workshops on literature, concerts, exhibitions hundreds of activities that will surely turn this event into something that will go beyond the world of books.

You can read the programme and the activities that will be held in the different halls as well as the book signing events at www.ferialibromadrid.com. The Book Fair has been organised by Madrid's Booksellers Association, Madrid's Publishers' Association and Madrid's Book Distributors Association

kids and grunge lovers coincide in a neighbourhood where the tolerant
environment acts like a magnet for all types of people.
This phenomenon was triggered by the Mercado de Fuencarral
(Fuencarral Market) which accommodates stores selling accessories and
clothes, a tattoo and piercing parlour, a modern hair salon, cosmetics,
shoe shops, record shops, jewellers, a Sofa-club, an art gallery and
even live music. In total there are 60 venues in an exhibition of
colour, lights and new trends all gathered in an atypical commercial
area with industrial decoration. The Mercado also occasionally
organises events like theatre performances, concerts, raves and film
cycles.

The Mercado is so important that the BBC refers
to it in its city section as a must see for anyone who visits Madrid. A
genuine avant-garde option that breaks away from the sober aesthetics
of traditional shopping centres.

Behind Fuencarral and as a prolongation of what can be experienced on this street by day or night, the Chueca neighbourhood is one of the most genuine and cosmopolitan quarters in the centre of Madrid: it’s Madrid’s Soho. Back in the 1980s, it was the cradle of the movida (Madrid’s in scene in those times),
and over recent years, this area has become a reference point for gays
and transsexuals and has established itself as one of the most lively
and fun areas in Madrid for a night out. The neuralgic centre of the
Chueca neighbourhood is the square that goes by the same name. From May
until September, the bars put chairs and tables out on the square,
which are always packed with people.

Over seven days (the last week in June), the neighbourhood also hosts Gay Pride Week,
which gathers over one million people every year. Concerts, dance and
theatre performances, discussions, festivities, exhibitions and many
more activities to commemorate the beginning of the fight for gay and
lesbian rights. The most heavily attended event of the week is the Gay
Pride Demonstration, a parade with floats and fancy dress costumes that
sets out from Chueca and floods the streets of the centre of Madrid
with rainbow flags.

As well as the vast commercial and leisure offer, Chueca sustains a
whole life philosophy where openness and the absence of conventionalism
are the main trends. Chueca is the place to be and the place to be
seen, to seep in the modernity and to let fun run wild.

With the rise of flamenco bars in the 19th century, flamenco
enjoyed its finest hour in the capital. These days, the flamenco bars
and clubs are carrying on the tradition, offering a chance to see
flamenco at its purest every night, while enjoying a fine meal or a
drink.

Our journey begins in the most traditional flamenco tapas bars in Madrid. El Rincón de Jerez
(Rufino Blanco, 5. Tel.: 91 355 47 45) is located in the Salamanca
neighbourhood and is one of the venues with the most authentic
atmosphere. At 11 o clock every night, the waiters and the audience
sing “la salve”, a tradition which “comes directly from Jerez”,
according to the venue manager Rafael Cantero. “The
lights go down, and candles are lit in order to get the singers in the
mood, and the audience is given a song sheet so that they can join in”.

Not only can the audience enjoy the finest local music, but they can
also enjoy the traditional tapas and dishes such as gazpacho, potatoes,
fried fish and bull tail, and wines such as sherry and manzanilla de
Sanlúcar de Barrameda.

Los Gabrieles (Echegaray, 17. Tel.: 91 429 62 61) is
another of Madrid’s most traditional flamenco venues. Open since 1898,
according to manager Sonia Sebastián with the passing of time it has
become “an veritable flamenco museum, having remained the same for over
a decade”. The Andalusian decoration stands out, with its tiled walls
depicting scenes from mythical works such as Don Quixote.

From 1:00 till 9:00 it is a regular bar, where locals come together to
chat, have an aperitif and enjoy the purest flamenco. After 9:00 it
becomes a cocktail bar, but flamenco music remains ever present until
the early hours of the morning.

Tablaos: A fine meal and the very best dancing.

After an aperitif and a few drinks during the afternoon, we head off to
enjoy a delicious meal in front of some of the most historic of
Madrid’s flamenco stages, “los tablaos”. While we enjoy a wine
accompanied by some of the more traditional Spanish dishes, the most
prestigious artists of the flamenco world demonstrate their art.

The Corral de la Morería (Morería, 17. Tel.: 91
365 84 46) is one of the oldest and most famous of the capital’s
flamenco bars. Open since 1956, this venue offers the very best in
flamenco, courtesy of its own group of dancers, guitarists and singers
in addition to established artists of the scene. Such names as Juan Andrés Maya, Belén López, Lola Greco and José Greco, Antonio Gades, Mario Maya and El Güito have all performed on its stage.

While the audience enjoys the show, El Corral has some of the most
traditional of Spanish dishes on offer, from Castilian soup or Paella
Valenciana, to a pastry of Manchego cheese or prawns in garlic, all
accompanied by the finest Spanish wine, such as a Tinto Solaz or a
Rioja de Crianza. Nonetheless, if you prefer simply to enjoy the show,
then tickets are available (a drink is included in the price) which
allow spectators to enjoy the show for the price of 32 Euros.

Over the course of its almost 50 years of existence, a whole host of
celebrities have visited this flamenco bar. From the great American
actors and actresses of the first half of the 20th century, such as Gary Cooper, Rita Hayworth and Charlton Heston to politicians such as George Bush, Richard Nixon, John F. Kennedy, Henry Kissinger and Carlos Menem and great artists such as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí .

The Café de Chinitas (Torija, 7. Telephone: 91 559
51 35) is located nearby, and is renowned in the capital for the
original decoration of its stage with manila shawls. Located in the
basements of an 18th century palace, close to the Plaza de Oriente,
this venue has offered the finest flamenco and national and
international gastronomy since its opening in 1970.

Also known for its bullfighting ambience, artists of the calibre of La Chunga, María Albaicín, Lola Flores, Pastora Imperio, El Lebrijano and Manzanita have
all performed on its stage. In addition to these great artists, the
venue also has its own flamenco group who perform every night at 22:30.

Without leaving the area, our next stop is Las Carboneras (Plaza del Conde de Miranda, 1. Telephone: 91 542 86 77). Opened four years ago under the guidance of three friends -Manuela Vega, Ana Romero and La Tacha
- with the idea of recovering the traditional flamenco atmosphere, it
has made a name for itself as an innovative venue, a breath of fresh
air on the flamenco scene. The avant garde decoration is testimony to
this, in combination with the pure flamenco dancing on offer.

Although still in its infancy, artists of the calibre of Montse Cortés, Manuel Reyes, Rocío Molina, Alejandro Granados and Belén Fernández
have all performed on its stage. Its own group, composed of four
dancers, two singers and two guitarists, perform from Monday to
Saturday. According to Manuela Vega, the show is based on “the most
traditional flamenco, but with plenty of room for improvisation”.

There is one show from Monday to Thursday, at 22:30, while on Friday
and Saturday there are two performances, at 20:30 and 23:00. Entrance
costs 22 Euros, including a drink or a tapa, while a ticket with a meal
included costs around 40 Euros.

Casa Patas (Cañizares, 10. Tel: 91 369 04 96) is an
equally innovative venue, and has offered one of the most attractive
flamenco shows in the capital on a daily basis for over 20 years.
According to Begoña Fernandez, one of the managers, “Unlike other
venues who have a regular group, at Casa Patas we have a different
programme on offer each month. The programme also varies from week to
week and the weekends are also different. From Monday to Thursday we
have a session at 22:30, while at the weekend there are two
performances a day, at 21:00 and at midnight. Again, the artists vary
from show to show.

The performers are among the most famous in the flamenco world, such as El Negri’, singer of La Barbería del Sur and Lole Montoya. With regards to the dancers, there are artists such as Marcos Flores and Olga Penicet, both dancers from Rafael Amargo’s company; Mara Martínez, who has danced with Antonio Canales and Rafael Matos, principal dancer of Tito Losada’s group.

In addition to these flamenco bars, the capital also has other venues offering the finest flamenco performances. El Corral de la Pacheca (Juan Ramón Jiménez. Tel: 01 353 01 00), Torres Bermejas (Mesonero Romanos, 11. Tel: 91 532 33 22 ), Arco de Cuchilleros (Cuchilleros, 7. Tel: 01 364 02 63) o Las Tablas (Plaza de España, 9. Tel: 91 542 05 20) are all worthy of note.

Flamenco until the early hours

For those who wish to carry on until the early hours of the morning, the Calle Echagaray is an ideal place to go. Cardamomo
(Echegaray, 5. Telephone: 91 369 07 57) is one of the finest venues in
this area, famous for its live performances and record launches.

Artists such as Diego el Cigala, Raimundo Amador, Ramón el Portugués and Ketama have
all performed on its stage. The performances themselves
notwithstanding, it is not uncommon to see the audience clapping and
accompanying the artists, dancing to purest flamenco rhythms until the
early hours of the morning. It opens every day except Monday, from
21:00 to 03:00.

The bar Clan (Ronda de Toledo, 20. Teléfono: 91
528 84 01) can be found close to Cardamomo, near calle Ribera de
Curtidores and the Madrid Flea Market. Decorated in an Arabic style
reminiscent of the Alhambra, it is an ideal place to enjoy a quiet meal
at the weekends, or a drink and a live performance by some of the most
renowned artists on the flamenco scene. Among the artists who have
performed on its stage, it is worth highlighting Elena Andújar, Angélica ‘La Tremendita’ and Leo Treviño.

For those who wish to dance until the sun comes up, there are two more bars with a distinct flamenco atmosphere: Al Andalus (Capitán Haya, 19. Tel: 91 556 14 39) and Ole con Ole
(formerly known as the sala Axarquía on calle Calatrava, 32. Tel: 91
366 66 03). They offer live flamenco performances as well as spacious
dance floors, where the more courageous can flaunt their abilities to
the tune of sevillanas, zapateaos or rumbas.

inspired by the life of Anne Frank, the girl who accounted the horrors
of the Nazi holocaust in her diary. The show features music by José
Luis Tierno and script by Jaime Azpilicueta, and is supported by the

kindest and most endearing side, and its goal is to transmit the
happiness, energy and passion for life with which Anne Frank
experienced one of the darkest periods in the history of humanity.
Distance to our apartments for rent in Madrid:
Apartment Tirso de Molina is a 2 minute-walk to Calderon Teatre
Apartment Retiro is a 10 minutes away by subway to Calderon Teatre

it, located on Paseo del Prado in a building which once was the

our city.

The new centre of Obra Social "la Caixa" is conceived as a 21st-century
sociocultural centre. The impressive building is a former electric
power station rehabilitated by the architecture studio Herzog & de
Meuron, and is located on Paseo del Prado, 36, next to the Art Walk
with the three major museums in Madrid: the Prado, the Thyssen and the
Reina Sofía. Its calendar is open to all disciplines and audiences,
guaranteeing the success of an institution which contributes even more
to the already rich cultural offering in Madrid.
Distance to our apartments for rent in Madrid:
Apartment Tirso de Molina is a 10 minute-walk to Caixa Forum
Apartment Retiro is a 10 minutes away by subway to Caixa Forum
