will be a challenge for the spectators, inviting them to take part of
an experience that can be individual or collective. This proposal
implies that the public becomes absorbed by a program that mixes
relations between acquaintances and strangers, fathers and sons, young
people and adults, power and individuals. The program, no matter which
language each piece uses, will also promote intercultural meetings
between various races and nationalities, as well as offering an
interesting perspective of gender through pieces created and performed
by women such as Shantala, Sònia Gómez, Paloma Calle, Louisa Merino,
Sara Serrano or Antonia Baehr.

Galleries, collectors and other contemporary art players will be travelling from all over the world to Madrid, the capital of Spain, for ARCOmadrid_ 2010, the International Contemporary Art Fair, from February 17th through 21st. Given its growing influence, this annual fair is one of the world's major art market events and turns Madrid into an exciting world capital for contemporary art.

The most noteworthy new introduction at the upcoming edition of the art fair is the focus on Los Angeles, one of the world's epicentres for art right now, as the fair's special invited guest. In its PANORAMA program ARCOmadrid_ 2010 is inviting a city, instead of a country as was the case before, and L.A. was chosen for the dynamic creative diversity that has earned it a place at the top of the art market ranking. This is the beginning of a number of editions of the fair that will bring to Madrid the very best of what's happening in contemporary art worldwide, focusing not only on countries as it has done up until now, but also on major regions or urban centres in a globalised world that is increasingly more diverse and plural, overstepping national boundaries.

With a selection of 17 galleries, curated by Kris Kuramitsu and Christopher Miles, the visiting public will be given an overview in the Panorama: Los Angeles of a sample of artists and galleries demonstrating "a huge variety of works in terms of technique, genre and leaning", as the curators point out. Works created by "artists coming from different generations, backgrounds and degrees of fame" in a selection that is primarily looking for "vitality in all shapes and forms and trying to be as faithful as possible to the idea of offering a panorama of the city", despite the fact that L.A. "constantly surprises us and that it is impossible to come up with any totalising viewpoint", explained Kuramitsu and Miles.

L.A., a city for art
"As
a city for art, Los Angeles has become, and continues to be, a key
centre for production, distribution and discourse at a time when
centres are increasingly losing control and lacking in any kind of
dominant school or movement", the curators tell us. The movements that once defined cities, "have been replaced here by a plurality and promiscuity of activity that forecloses a monolithic identity".

In point of truth, and as one will see at ARCOmadrid_ 2010, "though
the history of art in L.A. is unquestionably shorter than that of many
other cities, it is nevertheless dense and complex, mirroring an art
scene that has reached adulthood -and we are not just speaking of
artists, but also of its schools and museums, its alternative spaces,
patrons and galleries- at a time of transition between the end of the
modern age and postmodernism, determined by its own diversity and the
plurality of an art practice that is predicated on the big changes that
took place in the arts, academia and society as a whole".

More specifically, one might well say that this 21st century metropolis "has
an artistic culture with a huge cross-generational wealth, largely
thanks to its influential position over the last few decades, its
network of private art school and academies, as well as the art
departments in public and private universities", as the curators of Panorama: Los Angeles put it.

From West Side to Mid-City
This huge diversity is reflected in a selection of galleries that
ranges from some of LA's most veteran spaces to others that opened just
a few years ago. A cross-section sampling the whole city, from the West
Side to Mid-City and Downtown. "Although the selection of artists in Panorama: Los Angeles cannot be said to be exhaustive, nor would you say that it is reductionist", claim Kuramitsu and Miles. "Our
goal was to present diverse works in terms of media, genre and leaning,
produced by artists of equally diverse origins, generations and fame". A project primarily based on galleries but which, according to the curators, has its eyes firmly set on artists, so that "the section dedicated to LA at ARCOmadrid_ 2010 includes big galleries, but also showcases big artists".

In fact the process of selection undertaken by the curators, "focused
on a search for vitality in all shapes and forms and tried to be as
faithful as possible to the idea of offering a panorama of the city
that constantly surprises us and is impossible to sum up in any
totalising viewpoint".

Demonstrating the whole
diversity of Los Angeles, the biggest and most populated city in
California, ARCOmadrid_ 2010 will be hosting the galleries 1301PE, ACME GALLERY and STEVE TURNER, from the East-West quarter and PERES PROJECTS and CHERRY AND MARTIN from Mid City, in the dynamic La Cienega Design Quarter, a magnet for lovers of art and design.

Also travelling to Madrid, this time from Chinatown in LA, are THOMAS SOLOMON, CHINA ART OBJECTS GALLERIES, KATHRYN BRENNAN GALLERY, THE HAPPY LION and REDLING FINE ART. And coming from the mythical neighbourhood of Venice is L.A. LOUVER while Beverly Hills is represented by MARGO LEAVIN GALLERY and REGEN PROJECTS.

Visitors
to the art fair will also come away with a good idea of the vitality of
the metropolitan area of Los Angeles, which has countless thriving art
centres like Culver City, in western Los Angeles county and the
headquarters of the US branch of SUSANNE VIELMETTER -which
also has a gallery in Berlin and has already exhibited at ARCOmadrid on
several occasions. Furthermore, rounding off the selection made by Kris Kuramitsu and Christopher Miles are the galleries from Santa Monica, ROSAMUND FELSEN GALLERY, SHOSHANA WAYNE and CHRISTOPHER GRIMES GALLERY. In fact Christopher Grimes has been a regular at ARCOmadrid over the last few years.

Los Angeles takes over the street of Madrid
ARCOmadrid's cultural programme oversteps the boundaries of the
exhibition centre itself, because, similarly to other years, during the
month of February the city of Madrid is a hotbed of exhibitions,
performances and other cultural events focused on the fair's invited
guest, this year the city of Los Angeles.

A programme coordinated by the writer George Stolz together with the ARCOmadrid team, and curated by Kris Kuramitsu and Christopher Miles,
will add to the vision of LA offered by art galleries. The Museo
Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS), Matadero Madrid, Las
Arquerías de Nuevos Ministerios and Instituto Cervantes are some of the
cultural centres and museums which will be hosting various shows and
other art events from Los Angeles during ARCOmadrid.

ARCOmadrid_ 2010, a big event for the art market
Together with Panorama: Los Angeles,
around two hundred galleries and almost three thousand top drawer
artists will make the fair a good mirror of the latest tendencies in
contemporary art. The work on view will undoubtedly reflect the
existing plethora of languages, supports and expression, ranging from
painting to performance, not forgetting sculpture, installation,
digital art and more emerging creative expressions.

Without
abandoning the moderate and measured approach it adopted last year,
ARCOmadrid_ 2010 will give collectors and other players a chance to
discover the best new art from Spain and worldwide. Together with the
galleries exhibiting in the core General Programme, the art fair also
lends a spotlight to groundbreaking art in its various programmes: Solo Projects, Expanded-Box, CINEMALoop and Performing ARCO.
These curated sections feature projects coming from around thirty
different countries, while also reinforcing the fair as a showcase for
the best and most cutting-edge contemporary art.

The final piece in the art fair is the section ARCO Instituciones,
aimed at publicising the work of public and private organisations
actively supporting the art world through collecting. Moreover,
visitors have a space for art publications, especially contemporary
art, as part of Art Publishers and Magazines.

In parallel with all these sections and programmes is the annual Experts Forum,
now in its eight year, which brings together artists, collectors,
critics, curators, theorists and other players in the art world to
discuss issues on interest. The city of Los Angeles will also feature
strongly in these panels, with "Alternative Approaches to Presenting Art in Los Angeles"directed by Russell Ferguson, chair of the UCLA Department of Art (Los Angeles, USA), as well as the participation of Jorge Pardo, a Cuban-American artist resident in Los Angeles, in "Conversations With Artists".

An
extensive cultural programme rounds off ARCOmadrid_ 2010, the
International Contemporary Art Fair, making it a must visit event for
anyone seriously interested in discovering the latest in contemporary
art.

WEB SITE: http://www.ifema.es/web/ferias/arco/default_i.html

anniversary, hoping to attract even more participants than in 2009. In
the last edition, it was attended by over 136,000 professionals and
around 12,300 companies, including promoters, hotels and tour agencies,
from 170 countries and regions of the world. The fair, which will also
be open to the public, will boast 10 pavilions and will be held from
January 20 to 24 in Feria de Madrid.

Apartments Rental for Fitur in Madrid
Feria de Madrid will become one big globe as it welcomes official
organisations, wholesalers, tour operators, travel agencies, transport
companies, catering companies etc. Together they will create one large
showcase in which professionals of the tourism sector will be invited
to define their strategies, alliances and lines of work. However, it is
also an opportunity for the general public to discover the infinite
number of destinations to which they can go and enjoy their next
holiday. For the first two days the fair will be open exclusively to
professionals, but at the weekend it will also welcome the general
public. Concurrently with the commercial showcase there will also be
array conferences, courses and presentations of products related to the
tourism industry.

The figures speak for themselves, proving how successful the event
is. This year, different stands will represent over 170 countries and
12,300 tourist companies that will bring their most attractive offers
to Madrid. Business and leisure go hand in hand in Fitur, which also
offers parallel events like Fitur Congresos, the monographic Meetings
and Incentive Trips Workshop organised on January 18 and 19, which will
attract 200 international buyers from some 30 countries. The 2010
edition will also present, for the first time, Fitur Green (on January
20 and 21), the fair's greenest initiative, showcasing proposals that
focus on reasonable energy use in the hotel sector.

Gran Vía's Hundredth Anniversary

Fitur presents a whole range of novelties, such as the return of
countries like Botswana, the celebration of the Jacobean Year along the
Way of St. James and Switzerland's hiking year. And, what about Madrid?
From its stand in pavilion 9, the host city will concentrate on the main event of 2010: Gran Vía's centenary,
which will be celebrated on April 4. The legendary street will move to
Fitur to stage a range of activities: a show of period costumes,
photographic exhibitions, film cycles, concerts... An excellent
atmosphere to celebrate a very special anniversary and to kick off a
whole programme of leisure and culture activities that invites people
from Madrid and elsewhere to enjoy the city to the full.

In December, the city
sheds its regular look and dons its best smile, as every corner of the
capital fills up with bright lights, shows, music, markets and a whole
range of surprises. This festive season is best enjoyed on the streets.

A pyrotechnic show visiting the four seasons will officially kick off
the most long-awaited festivities of the year: the Christmas
celebrations. On Thursday December 17, the English company The World
Famous will present in Plaza de Oriente (8 pm) the Night of Fire
which will conjure up magical moments, like the arrival of the gold and
silver-clad Snow Queen and the reading of the winning tale from the
Madrid school Christmas story competition.

Once again, the city lights will play a prominent
role in the festivities. Fashion designers -David Delfín, Roberto
Torreta, Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada...-, graphic designers -Óscar Mariné,
Roberto Turégano...- and architects -Teresa Sapey, Alberto Marcos...-
have all played a part in their creation. This year, the celebrity
designers will be sharing the limelight with the new illumination that
Ben Busche has come up with for Gran Vía, an avenue that will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2010. Motifs outlining an imaginary skyline formed by skyscrapers, cinemas and theatres will set aglow the 20th
century's first backbone of trade and nightlife. Lavapiés will also
boast special decorations, and Plaza de Ministriles will be filled with
400 glowing golden cages storing 400 memories donated by citizens from the neighbourhood.

The youngest members of the family will be able to enjoy the magic of Christmas in Kid's City,
erected next to the jetty and the bandstand in El Retiro Park from
December 23 to January 3. There will be games, workshops,
storytellers... and even a zeppelin (December 23 to 28) offering an
unprecedented journey to the age of the great aviation pioneers.
Visitors can travel even further back in time by stepping into the
fascinating Jurassic World, at Puente del Rey next to Príncipe Pío, which will be exhibiting 34 highly realistic dinosaurs.

The city will be dotted with Christmas trees like
the tree that will preside over Plaza de España, a tip of the hat to
the 2010 Shanghai Universal Exhibition. Moving on to the nativity scenes,
the City Hall's crib, comprising figures made by master José Luis Mayo
Lebrija and designed by Enrique Haro, will be located in the Colón
Tourism Centre. The nativity scene presented by Telefónica (Gran Vía,
28) will be an impressive display of technology.

The Christmas season would not be complete without the traditional markets, like the ones on Plaza Mayor, Plaza de
Jacinto Benavente -Christmas Card Fair-, Plaza de los Carros -Pink

de Otoño (Autumn Festival), which will be held in Madrid from November

This will be the last year the capital celebrates the traditional Festival de Otoño,
since from 2010 it will change its season to spring. After 26 years as
one of the most important cultural events in Europe, it promises to say
goodbye to the fall in style: 35 shows performed by
six Spanish companies and troupes from 19 other countries in 11 venues
in Madrid and 10 in municipalities of the region.
The opening act will be particularly moving since it will pay tribute to the recently deceased choreographer Pina Bausch,
whose presence has always been a constant in the capital's festival.
Teatros del Canal will lend its stage to various performances. Between
the 4th and 8th, it will welcome Kontakthof,
one of Bausch's most emblematic shows that she premiered last year in
two different versions: one with children and the other starring
dancers who are over 65. It is the latter that will feature in this
festival. A true native of
Jerez despite moving to Madrid at a young age, he has been one of the
great flamenco singers for some time. In fact, this decade he has
become one of the best-selling flamenco singers.

José
Mercé is bringing his magic to Teatro de la Zarzuela. The award-winning
flamenco singer is introducing the songs from his new album, 'Ruido'.
Songs like 'Contigo, Fe' and 'Que Venga Ella', among others, are
sentimental ballads with a decidedly flamenco feel and carefully chosen
verses. This time there will be no controversy.

In some contemporary alegrías he achieves the difficult task of
retaining the flavour of this flamenco style. There is another
instrumental piece, by guitarist Dani de Morón with vocal support in
bulerías. The song 'Ruido', which lends its title to the album, is a
silky bulería that retains the flamenco power that José Mercé controls
perfectly.

Mercé's
character is distinctly rooted in Cadiz, and he presents himself as a
native artist who has been attracted to flamenco since he was born in
Santiago de Jerez de la Frontera into the middle of the Soto family. He
has become famous in current flamenco for his ability to reach all
kinds of audiences without losing any of his essence or depth, and is a
genius who has his own voice and can poetically recreate the most
orthodox songs and covers.

He
and his friends recorded an album when he was little more than a boy,
and he soon became famous. He has sung for Antonio Gades's company,
taken part in Carlos Saura's film 'Bodas de Sangre', worked with Ballet
Nacional and won the 1986 Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco in
Cordoba. He then disappeared from the public eye until he was
artistically revived by Vicente Amigo, 12 years after his previous
performance. Vicente also produced his first professional album.

to a strange and evocative essay on aesthetics which looks at beauty,
desire and pain. Although the actual book was only published in 1961,
the relationship between eroticism and death has been a obsession for
philosophers, psychologists and artists since the Romantic period.
Following in their footsteps, in the way Surrealists also did, Bataille
produced a vast oeuvre on all sorts of paraphilias which featured
surprising moments of lucidity.

thousands of people will flock to Madrid, to the Chueca neighbourhood
on Wednesday July 1 to party in style until Saturday July 4 when the
festivities will end with the traditional gay pride parade.

As usual,
the festivities will begin with the opening speech, although this year
there will be two opening speeches: on Wednesday, July 1 Boris
Izaguirre and Spain's Eurovision representative, Soraya Arnelas, will
read the opening speech in Plaza de Chueca, whilst actors Cayetana
Guillén Cuervo and Daniel Guzmán will read another speech in Plaza
Vázquez de Mella

After the opening speeches, and until July 5, both squares will be
packed with fun and entertainment. The stages will accommodate the best
DJs of the moment, plus a whole range of different concerts by a
selection of performers from pop artists to electronic rhythms. Plaza
Vázquez de Mella will also host the Final Gala of the 2009 Mister Gay
Pride Spain Contest and this year, to triple the fun, another square is
joining in the events: Plaza de Santa Maria Soledad Torres Acosta, also
known as Plaza de Luna. Another space for performances and musical
shows.

However, artists won't only be performing in squares, but also on
different stages offering a vast programme and range of activities:
Calle Pelayo, Calle Libertad, Plaza de la Luna and Plaza del Rey. One
of them, Plaza del Rey, will be the Cultural Stage, the main setting
for the MADO Cultural Festival, MUESTRA-T, with the slogan Celebración 40 años de Orgullo en el Mundo (1969-2009) (40 Years Celebrating Gay Pride in the World [1969-2009]).

LESMADRID 09 will start on Saturday July 4, after the
parade. This lesbian festivity will be staged in one of the most
glamorous venues in Madrid, the Círculo de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts
Circle). The event will take place in the dance hall and the column
gallery with two different atmospheres that will accommodate
performances by DJs as important as Moni-K and DJ Lara. There will also
be visual performances and go-go dancers.

Madrid's Gay Pride gathers a range of events which are open to
everyone, catering for a variety of tastes, from conferences and round
tables to exhibitions and cultural or sport activities. One of the most
notable events on the agenda is the group exhibition Social Pride
Project, from June 16 to July 6, which will spread out around different
venues in Chueca, and the theatre play The Dying Gaul,
by Craig Lucas, which will be performed from June 25 to 28 at the
Centro Cultural Casa de Vacas in El Retiro Park. Then there's the LGTB Visible Culture Festival, now in its 5th edition -from June 16 to July 12 in Madrid- with 11 shows and 13 theatre plays, plus a round table about theatre.

For sport lovers, the programme includes the third edition of the Proud
10 Km., which is open to athletes and amateurs on June 28. The
itinerary departs from Plaza de España around the centre of Madrid. As
well as this activity, this year's programme also offers more events
than ever before, so to make sure you don't miss a thing, check out the
complete programme: MADO'09.

The star event is the Gay Pride Parade that
actually names the festivities and was the origin of this whole week of
festivities and activities. In recent years, Gay Pride parades in
Madrid have gathered over two million participants. The traditional
colourful demonstration-parade around the streets of the capital is the
perfect ending to a week of festivities. This year the parade will take
place on July 4, and hopes to attract thousands of people, as in
previous editions, creating a stunning human river that will glide,
like a multicolour snake, along Madrid's main streets. As usual, the
parade will kick off from Puerta de Alcalá and march down to Plaza de
España, calling at Cibeles, Calle de Alcalá and the whole of Gran Vía.
The parade will end in Plaza de España, which is the best place to
cheer on each and every one of the floats as they arrive at their
destination. Plaza de España will also host an event that will gather a
varied selection of artists.

After a week of partying and not getting that much sleep, the best
option is to end with a quiet activity like the picnic that is staged
every year by the lake in El Retiro Park, in front of the monument
devoted to Alfonso XII. Take your friends and family and end this week
of events in a chilled-out atmosphere, enjoying the company of your
acquaintances and meeting new friends, as you give your stomach a
breather. In all, experience a week of festivities and celebrations in
one of the warmest and friendliest cities in the world, and you'll
surely want to come back for more next year.

46 years ago, the Museo del Prado commemorated the birth of Joaquín
Sorolla with a memorable retrospective of his works. Today, the art
gallery, who is seeking to pay tribute to the greatest Spanish masters
of the 19th century, has organised another major exhibition on the Valentian artist.

Sorolla's light has gone down in the history of art because he was able
to give life to those things which were inert. Aside from the
naturalism of the scenes he depicts, everything inside the painting
looks even more alive, if that's possible, thanks to the light; as
though the artist were not holding a brush but instead a lens capable
of capturing the entire spectrum of colours found in the water, the sky
and people's skin, and bestowing movement on motionless objects. For
this reason when historians make reference to Sorolla they speak of Luminism,
a technique which involves creating an image using different layers of
light, thus achieving very vibrant colours. Standing opposite many of
Sorolla's works the spectator feels physically blinded by the
paintings.
