Segovia, built on a craggy limestone escarpment at a
height of over 1,000 metres above sea level, stands out against the
bright blue of the Castilian sky, drawing a suggestive silhouette. Since
the 16th century, when Garci Ruiz de Castro, Segovia"s
first historian, first made the comparison, this silhouette has been
likened to a ship made of rock waiting for the two rivers, the Eresma
and the Clamores, which meet at its feet, to flood the valley so that it
may set sail, plying the wide sea of cornfields on the plateau.

It is a city to be visited at a leisurely pace and one to return to.
Since we have opened up to the idea of conservation in modern times,
Segovia has received all the official acknowledgements for its artistic
richness and wealth of monuments, for the transparency of its light,
for the crystal clear atmosphere which surrounds it, and for the leafy
woodland which encircles it, distinguishing Segovia as an oasis of green
in strong contrast with the ochre hues of its dry fields.

A Royal Decree issued long ago on 11th October 1884 declared the Aqueduct
an Artistic Historical Monument, a title
which was later conferred on other buildings such as the Tower of San
Esteban, the Monastery of El Parral, the Church of La Vera Cruz and the
Alcázar. In 1941 the declaration was extended to the whole of the old
town of Segovia. In 1947 all of the orchards and woodland which surround
it were recognised as an Aesthetic Reserve, and were placed under
protection. Finally, in 1985, UNESCO brought
the process to a close by declaring the City of Segovia a World
Heritage Site.

In the old town, houses and the city walls, palaces and churches,
graceful towers and trees combine and intertwine to form a unique web of
narrow and winding streets, small secluded squares or ones which
unexpectedly open out onto attractive views. In the midst of this web it
is sometimes difficult to distinguish the golden stones from the
vegetation which the seasons dress with the splendour of ever-changing
colour.

The first references describe Toletum in the 4th century BC
as the capital of Roman Carpetania. After this civilisation came two
Germanic peoples: the Alans and the Visigoths, under whom Toledo
lived a period of political and religious splendour. There then
followed three centuries of decline for the city during Muslim
occupation, until in 1085 Alfonso VI pushed for the repopulation of
these lands bathed by the Tagus river and made them the
capital of the kingdom of Castile.

In the second half of the 18th century, Alfonso X the Wise,
turned the city into one of the major cultural places in Europe. During
this period, thanks to the famous school of translators of Toledo, many
important philosophic and theological texts, which had been stored in
Arabic and Jewish libraries, were rediscovered. Around 12,000 Jews lived
in Toledo and left their mark with a multitude of synagogues.

The Catholic Monarchs had always showed their penchant for these lands.
But in 1561, faced with Toledo's inability to accommodate all the
official bodies, Felipe II transferred the Royal Court to Madrid. This
factor was a turning point in the history of the city, until the Church
gave new life to the enclave with convents and religious foundations.

The 19th century brought with it Romantic artists and literati,
a demographic recovery and the railway (1858). Over the second half of
the 20th century, there was a new industrial boost and in the
80's, Toledo became the capital of the Autonomous Region of Castilla-La
Mancha.

The most important monuments

Each and every one of the cultures and peoples who have passed through
Toledo have left behind their architectural style and monuments. The
city walls, for example, that had existed since the Roman era were
reconstructed and given their current appearance by the Arabs. Many
gates mark the route of the walls, but the Puerta de la Bisagra, which
bears the coat of arms of the Imperial City, is the most representative,
and also the gate that leads into the historic quarter of the city.

Mosque of Cristo de la Luz (10th century).
It is the only surviving mosque of its style from the ten that
originally existed in the city. It can be found just after passing
through the Puerta de la Bisagra. The horseshoe arches extend in a way
reminiscent of, and based on, the Grand Mosque in Cordoba.

Synagogue of El Tránsito (14th
century). Beautiful plastered walls precede a rectangular-shaped
interior covered with a lovely alfarje (latticed wood ceiling) which is
also home to the Sephardic museum.

Primada Cathedral. Built in Gothic
style between 1226 and 1493 on the site of a Visigoth church constructed
during the reign of Recaredo. The sacristy plays host to a valuable
collection of paintings by El Greco, Lucas Jordán, Van Dick and Goya.
But all the rooms are works of art in themselves: from the Capilla de
los Nuevos Reyes (Chapel of the New Monarchs) to the Capilla de Santiago
(Chapel of Santiago), through the renaissance choir, the Mozarabic
chapel and the chapter house.

El Greco House Museum. Although,
as the plaque at the entrance indicates, the painter did not actually
live here, this house accommodates paintings by the Cretan artist, such
as The Tears of Saint Peter or The Apostolate.

Alcazar of Toledo. Located on the highest point of the
town, during the Roman era it was a palace and under the Christians it
became the first square-shaped fortification. Under King Carlos I it
underwent important renovation work. Each façade is in a different style
and dates back to a different era: the east façade is medieval; the
west Renaissance; the north plateresque; and the south churrigueresque.
It was destroyed during the French invasion and the Spanish Civil War,
but was later reconstructed and now houses the Army and Military Museum.

Tradition

Here, time and history go hand in hand with craftsmanship: Toledo swords,
ceramics or damascene work.
Sword and sabre manufacturing is aimed mainly at the tourist market,
although orders are received from armies elsewhere in the world.

Damascening is an Arabic decorative craft whereby gold or silver is
inlaid into less noble but tougher materials (such as iron, bronze,
steel, earthenware, porcelain...), and is used for making rings,
bracelets, broaches, plates, etc. The city's streets abound with
workshops and outlets given over to craftwork, that do not go unnoticed
by the visitor, and which transform some spaces into mini bazaars.

Toledo's renowned cuisine is supported by the saying: "Cocinero y
cochero, tómalos de Toledo" (The cook and the driver should be from
Toledo), and by the references of Lope de Vega in his
book The Toledan Night written during the Golden Age. Game is
no doubt the key to this cuisine, which also benefits from excellent
ingredients, including oils, saffron and a wide range of garden produce.
Deer, wild boar, wood pigeons, turtledoves, quails and, of course, red
partridges, fill the plates of those who come to sample a most
traditional cuisine.

The menu does not stop there though. Roast suckling pig and lamb,
and beans with partridge or hare, venison with mushrooms or grilled,
marinated trout, aromatic smoked deer and crab soup are just some of the
dishes to be sampled.

Also worthy of note are the pisto (fried vegetable hash) from La Mancha -
made with the best vegetables of the gardens of Toledo - and pote
(peppers with eggs). Although these dishes clearly have their roots in
La Mancha, just as the city itself is a compendium of the most varied
arts, its cuisine has successfully assimilated the Arab legacy, present
in its confectionery, such as marzipan. Many sweets and
jams originate from the city's convents: pestiños, the ring-shaped
rosquillas or marquesitas... All washed down with a drop of Toledan
wine: Méntrida, Yepes, Quintanar, Ocaña...

Celebrated since the 13th century, Corpus Christi
Week is the most important holiday in this city. The Monstrance
of Arfe passes by balcony after balcony, all decorated with
shawls, flags and flowers. The procession walks along streets covered
with canopies, and the ground is strewn with rosemary and thyme, which
are first trodden by the giant carnival figures, then the Civil Guard,
the processional Cross, the fraternities with their banners, children
who have just received their First Communion, brotherhoods, the clergy,
the Archbishop, the authorities and the musical band.

Like previous years, the thirteenth edition of the
International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts (PHotoEspaña) will
be staged in dozens of museums, art galleries and cultural spaces in

As an increasingly international fair, PhotoEspaña 2010 will welcome
artists from 41 different countries who will present their work

the Official Section, over thirty shows will be structured around the
topic proposed by Sérgio Mah, who repeats as the festival curator. One
of the most notable exhibitions is the first Helen Levitt anthology,
which appears after her death last year. Entitled Lírica urbana.
Fotografías 1936-1993 (Urban Lyricism. Photographs 1936-1993), these

Municipal Tourist Board hopes to introduce growing numbers of people to
the history, art, architecture, gastronomy, literature and legends of

visitors to experience and enjoy the richness of the capital. We start
at Plaza Mayor, the social and commercial hub of Madrid for many
centuries. In its surrounding streets we discover the origins of the
city, remnants of the Medieval Ages, the glory of becoming the Capital
of the Spanish Kingdom and the changes that took place with the arrival
of a new dynasty. A past that has remained engraved in the city's
monumental buildings, squares and narrow streets, fiestas and social and
cultural celebrations.

Galleries, collectors and other contemporary art players will be travelling from all over the world to Madrid, the capital of Spain, for ARCOmadrid_ 2010, the International Contemporary Art Fair, from February 17th through 21st. Given its growing influence, this annual fair is one of the world's major art market events and turns Madrid into an exciting world capital for contemporary art.

The most noteworthy new introduction at the upcoming edition of the art fair is the focus on Los Angeles, one of the world's epicentres for art right now, as the fair's special invited guest. In its PANORAMA program ARCOmadrid_ 2010 is inviting a city, instead of a country as was the case before, and L.A. was chosen for the dynamic creative diversity that has earned it a place at the top of the art market ranking. This is the beginning of a number of editions of the fair that will bring to Madrid the very best of what's happening in contemporary art worldwide, focusing not only on countries as it has done up until now, but also on major regions or urban centres in a globalised world that is increasingly more diverse and plural, overstepping national boundaries.

With a selection of 17 galleries, curated by Kris Kuramitsu and Christopher Miles, the visiting public will be given an overview in the Panorama: Los Angeles of a sample of artists and galleries demonstrating "a huge variety of works in terms of technique, genre and leaning", as the curators point out. Works created by "artists coming from different generations, backgrounds and degrees of fame" in a selection that is primarily looking for "vitality in all shapes and forms and trying to be as faithful as possible to the idea of offering a panorama of the city", despite the fact that L.A. "constantly surprises us and that it is impossible to come up with any totalising viewpoint", explained Kuramitsu and Miles.

L.A., a city for art
"As
a city for art, Los Angeles has become, and continues to be, a key
centre for production, distribution and discourse at a time when
centres are increasingly losing control and lacking in any kind of
dominant school or movement", the curators tell us. The movements that once defined cities, "have been replaced here by a plurality and promiscuity of activity that forecloses a monolithic identity".

In point of truth, and as one will see at ARCOmadrid_ 2010, "though
the history of art in L.A. is unquestionably shorter than that of many
other cities, it is nevertheless dense and complex, mirroring an art
scene that has reached adulthood -and we are not just speaking of
artists, but also of its schools and museums, its alternative spaces,
patrons and galleries- at a time of transition between the end of the
modern age and postmodernism, determined by its own diversity and the
plurality of an art practice that is predicated on the big changes that
took place in the arts, academia and society as a whole".

More specifically, one might well say that this 21st century metropolis "has
an artistic culture with a huge cross-generational wealth, largely
thanks to its influential position over the last few decades, its
network of private art school and academies, as well as the art
departments in public and private universities", as the curators of Panorama: Los Angeles put it.

From West Side to Mid-City
This huge diversity is reflected in a selection of galleries that
ranges from some of LA's most veteran spaces to others that opened just
a few years ago. A cross-section sampling the whole city, from the West
Side to Mid-City and Downtown. "Although the selection of artists in Panorama: Los Angeles cannot be said to be exhaustive, nor would you say that it is reductionist", claim Kuramitsu and Miles. "Our
goal was to present diverse works in terms of media, genre and leaning,
produced by artists of equally diverse origins, generations and fame". A project primarily based on galleries but which, according to the curators, has its eyes firmly set on artists, so that "the section dedicated to LA at ARCOmadrid_ 2010 includes big galleries, but also showcases big artists".

In fact the process of selection undertaken by the curators, "focused
on a search for vitality in all shapes and forms and tried to be as
faithful as possible to the idea of offering a panorama of the city
that constantly surprises us and is impossible to sum up in any
totalising viewpoint".

Demonstrating the whole
diversity of Los Angeles, the biggest and most populated city in
California, ARCOmadrid_ 2010 will be hosting the galleries 1301PE, ACME GALLERY and STEVE TURNER, from the East-West quarter and PERES PROJECTS and CHERRY AND MARTIN from Mid City, in the dynamic La Cienega Design Quarter, a magnet for lovers of art and design.

Also travelling to Madrid, this time from Chinatown in LA, are THOMAS SOLOMON, CHINA ART OBJECTS GALLERIES, KATHRYN BRENNAN GALLERY, THE HAPPY LION and REDLING FINE ART. And coming from the mythical neighbourhood of Venice is L.A. LOUVER while Beverly Hills is represented by MARGO LEAVIN GALLERY and REGEN PROJECTS.

Visitors
to the art fair will also come away with a good idea of the vitality of
the metropolitan area of Los Angeles, which has countless thriving art
centres like Culver City, in western Los Angeles county and the
headquarters of the US branch of SUSANNE VIELMETTER -which
also has a gallery in Berlin and has already exhibited at ARCOmadrid on
several occasions. Furthermore, rounding off the selection made by Kris Kuramitsu and Christopher Miles are the galleries from Santa Monica, ROSAMUND FELSEN GALLERY, SHOSHANA WAYNE and CHRISTOPHER GRIMES GALLERY. In fact Christopher Grimes has been a regular at ARCOmadrid over the last few years.

Los Angeles takes over the street of Madrid
ARCOmadrid's cultural programme oversteps the boundaries of the
exhibition centre itself, because, similarly to other years, during the
month of February the city of Madrid is a hotbed of exhibitions,
performances and other cultural events focused on the fair's invited
guest, this year the city of Los Angeles.

A programme coordinated by the writer George Stolz together with the ARCOmadrid team, and curated by Kris Kuramitsu and Christopher Miles,
will add to the vision of LA offered by art galleries. The Museo
Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS), Matadero Madrid, Las
Arquerías de Nuevos Ministerios and Instituto Cervantes are some of the
cultural centres and museums which will be hosting various shows and
other art events from Los Angeles during ARCOmadrid.

ARCOmadrid_ 2010, a big event for the art market
Together with Panorama: Los Angeles,
around two hundred galleries and almost three thousand top drawer
artists will make the fair a good mirror of the latest tendencies in
contemporary art. The work on view will undoubtedly reflect the
existing plethora of languages, supports and expression, ranging from
painting to performance, not forgetting sculpture, installation,
digital art and more emerging creative expressions.

Without
abandoning the moderate and measured approach it adopted last year,
ARCOmadrid_ 2010 will give collectors and other players a chance to
discover the best new art from Spain and worldwide. Together with the
galleries exhibiting in the core General Programme, the art fair also
lends a spotlight to groundbreaking art in its various programmes: Solo Projects, Expanded-Box, CINEMALoop and Performing ARCO.
These curated sections feature projects coming from around thirty
different countries, while also reinforcing the fair as a showcase for
the best and most cutting-edge contemporary art.

The final piece in the art fair is the section ARCO Instituciones,
aimed at publicising the work of public and private organisations
actively supporting the art world through collecting. Moreover,
visitors have a space for art publications, especially contemporary
art, as part of Art Publishers and Magazines.

In parallel with all these sections and programmes is the annual Experts Forum,
now in its eight year, which brings together artists, collectors,
critics, curators, theorists and other players in the art world to
discuss issues on interest. The city of Los Angeles will also feature
strongly in these panels, with "Alternative Approaches to Presenting Art in Los Angeles"directed by Russell Ferguson, chair of the UCLA Department of Art (Los Angeles, USA), as well as the participation of Jorge Pardo, a Cuban-American artist resident in Los Angeles, in "Conversations With Artists".

An
extensive cultural programme rounds off ARCOmadrid_ 2010, the
International Contemporary Art Fair, making it a must visit event for
anyone seriously interested in discovering the latest in contemporary
art.

WEB SITE: http://www.ifema.es/web/ferias/arco/default_i.html

anniversary, hoping to attract even more participants than in 2009. In
the last edition, it was attended by over 136,000 professionals and
around 12,300 companies, including promoters, hotels and tour agencies,
from 170 countries and regions of the world. The fair, which will also
be open to the public, will boast 10 pavilions and will be held from
January 20 to 24 in Feria de Madrid.

Apartments Rental for Fitur in Madrid
Feria de Madrid will become one big globe as it welcomes official
organisations, wholesalers, tour operators, travel agencies, transport
companies, catering companies etc. Together they will create one large
showcase in which professionals of the tourism sector will be invited
to define their strategies, alliances and lines of work. However, it is
also an opportunity for the general public to discover the infinite
number of destinations to which they can go and enjoy their next
holiday. For the first two days the fair will be open exclusively to
professionals, but at the weekend it will also welcome the general
public. Concurrently with the commercial showcase there will also be
array conferences, courses and presentations of products related to the
tourism industry.

The figures speak for themselves, proving how successful the event
is. This year, different stands will represent over 170 countries and
12,300 tourist companies that will bring their most attractive offers
to Madrid. Business and leisure go hand in hand in Fitur, which also
offers parallel events like Fitur Congresos, the monographic Meetings
and Incentive Trips Workshop organised on January 18 and 19, which will
attract 200 international buyers from some 30 countries. The 2010
edition will also present, for the first time, Fitur Green (on January
20 and 21), the fair's greenest initiative, showcasing proposals that
focus on reasonable energy use in the hotel sector.

Gran Vía's Hundredth Anniversary

Fitur presents a whole range of novelties, such as the return of
countries like Botswana, the celebration of the Jacobean Year along the
Way of St. James and Switzerland's hiking year. And, what about Madrid?
From its stand in pavilion 9, the host city will concentrate on the main event of 2010: Gran Vía's centenary,
which will be celebrated on April 4. The legendary street will move to
Fitur to stage a range of activities: a show of period costumes,
photographic exhibitions, film cycles, concerts... An excellent
atmosphere to celebrate a very special anniversary and to kick off a
whole programme of leisure and culture activities that invites people
from Madrid and elsewhere to enjoy the city to the full.
