sol_reloj.jpgThe main square of Madrid was named after a gate in the wall that stood there until 1510 and had a sun on its front.
In the course of the last five centuries, the square has been the centre of the city's intelectual and commercial life, and the first zone to have electrical lights.
From there radiated also the transports of Madrid and the whole Spain, and there is still a marker in the floor indicating the Point Zero, from where all the distances to Madrid are measured and the door numbers are counted in Spain.
One of the most remarkable buildings of the square is the Casa de Correos, the former head office of the Spanish post, built in the 18th century, which features a tower with a clock in each of its four faces; it is here that the people of Madrid celebrate the New Year.
Among the sculptures that can be seen in the square, two must be noted here: a Venus, copy of La Mariblanca which is at the Municipal Museum, and an equestrial statue of King Carlos III.
