The royal palace is no longer used as a residence, but it has been kept
intact since it last functioned as home to the king, primarily serving
as a tourist attraction. The entire palace is not open to the public,
but most of the more important rooms can be visited. The palace is
interesting in its own right, in particular its architecture and
gardens (there are two, the Jardines del Moro and the Sabattini
gardens). There are also some excellent frescos inside the palace by
Tiépolo, and paintings by Velázquez, Goya, Rubens, El Greco, Juan de
Flandes and Caravaggio, among others.

Open: October to March 9 AM to 5 PM; Sunday and Holidays 9 AM to 2 PM; April to September 9 AM to 6 PM; Sunday and Holidays 9 AM to 3 PM. Closed when official acts are held.

One of the best museums in the world
This gallery in Madrid has the most complete collection of Spanish painting from 11th-18th centuries, and many masterpieces by great universal artists such as El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Bosch, Tiziano, Van Dyck and Rembrandt.
The quality and variety of its collection makes the Prado Museum one of the world's finest. It brings together the best collection of Spanish painting, the most important works of Flemish and Italian painting, and noteworthy examples of the German, French and English schools. Here you can admire masterpieces of universal art such as Velázquez' "Maids of Honour", Goya's "Majas", El Greco's "Nobleman with a hand on his chest", Bosch's "Garden of Delights", and Rubens' "The Three Graces", amongst other priceless pieces. Although the museum was created to house painting and sculpture, it also has major collections of drawings, engravings, coins and medals, as well as items of sumptuous and decorative art.
The museum's exhibition area increases by more than 50% in 2007 with the extension designed by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo. The new area includes four rooms for temporary exhibitions, the restored cloister of Jerónimos Church, a large entrance hall, an auditorium with capacity for 438 people, along with different installations for storage and restoration of works of art. Outside, you will notice the impressive bronze doors by Cristina Iglesias and the Tuscan box plant gardens.

The Rastro is one of the symbols of the city. Every Sunday and bank holiday, from 9.00 to 14.00 hours, the streets around the Ribera de Curtidores and leading to the Ronda de Toledo receive hundreds of visitors all looking through stalls of second-hand records and CDs, books and clothes, antiques, coins, furniture and craft work. There are other specialist street markets in the capital, such as the market in the Plaza Mayor, which specialises in stamps, or the crafts market in the Plaza de las Comendadoras.

The famous Museo del Prado in Madrid will celebrate its new $208 million expansion with a major exhibition called "Velázquez's Fables," which
opens Tuesday and runs through Feb. 28. The exhibition is the first
major one to focus on this renowned artist's narrative work in 17
